This project is an opportunity to look at the successes and issues with the relatively newly installed separated bike lanes in downtown Vancouver. By comparing the volume of riders on each cycle route with the amount of accidents between cyclist and vehicles we can judge the success of this project. General bike ridership increased by 40% in the city between 2008 and 2011 (City of Vancouver). With the ridership numbers collected on the installed separated bike lanes, along with data on accidents from ICBC, we can analyse the change in amount of accidents as a function of the volume of cyclist. To compare before and after, I will use 2008, which is the last full year before the installation of the bike lanes, with 2011 and 2012, the two first full years after the lane were installed. The study highlights the positives of the project and the areas needing improvement in the cycling infrastructure of the city.
